Maryland Ron Paul 2008 Headquarters
Vote history analysis: Historically, Maryland is a blue (Democratic) state. Maryland holds closed primaries so only registered Republicans may participate. Initiatives Voter Affiliation Change - November 19th is the deadline to switch parties to Republican GOP National Convention Delegate Drive - Maryland sends 37 delegates to the National Convention! Basically, how does the delegate system work in MD?
1.) This link is for a list of who has filed already with the Board of Election Supervisors in Annapolis, MD
2.) This link is for the official three page Republican Party rules on how a delegate is selected and how they are required to vote.
3.) We need three delegate candidates and three alternate delegate candidates for each congressional district.
4.) Candidates can be designated or undesignated. If a candidate is designated, the presidential candidate name for whom they are designated will appear next to the delegate's/alternate delegate's name on the ballot.
5.) In order to be designated by a particular presidential candidate, the presidential candidate's headquarters must certify in writing by 12/13/07 AND that they have chosen the delegate/alternate delegate.
6.) The filing deadline to register as a delegate/alternate delegate is 12/3/07 AD.
7.) The top three vote getters for delegate and the top three voter getters for alternate delegate in each congressional district will be allowed to attend the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. September 1-4, 2008 AD.
8.) At the convention, delegates must vote for whoever WON their congressional district until:
a.) A presidential candidate gets 1259 votes at the convention.
b.) The presidential candidate that WON their congressional district gets less than 35% of the delegate votes at the convention.
c.) The delegates have voted twice at the convention.
d.) The presidential candidate that WON the delegates congressional district releases the delegate.
9.) Alternate delegates get to go to the convention, but only get to vote if the delegate is absent.
What is the significance of delegates as they relate to getting Dr Paul elected?
If Ron Paul does not get 1259 delegate votes at the convention he will not be the nominee. If no one gets 1259 delegate votes after the second ballot, the delegate can vote for who ever they want to. This convention has a real strong chance of being a split convention i.e. no one has 1259 votes on the first ballot.
Should every Paul supporter in MD really go register to be a delegate?
NO! Three for delegate and three for alternate delegate per congressional district.
Should we make sure we know all the names of the pro-Ron Paul delegates before election day?
YES!!!! Absolutely.
